The Best Parenting Time Practices for Summer
Summertime can present a rather rocky road for divorced parents when it comes to parenting time. Early planning can make a huge difference. It is not just timing with your ex that you need to consider. You also need to take into account expectations at work to ensure you get the time you want with your kids.
Plan Early and Thoroughly
Most court orders require sufficient advance notice for vacation time. If you are in that position, make sure you comply by letting your co-parent know when you plan on using that time. Keep in mind Memorial Day, the Fourth of July and Labor Day are important holidays that may have an impact on your plans.
A detailed itinerary is also necessary for a smoother visit. Things to include are when and how you will be traveling and what route you plan on taking. If you are flying, flight numbers, arrival times and departures should be included. Include phone numbers of the places you will be staying.
While this may seem like information overkill, it provides assurance that should an emergency arise, all will be in the loop. It is not about controlling the visit or seeking permission; it is about being prepared for the unexpected.
Cover All Bases
Work with your co-parent to ensure all the bases are covered. Will the kids be spending time at summer camp? Are there daycare requirements, and, if so, how will that be handled? Be sure you get these things taken care of before they become an issue. Proper planning will make this time with the kids go better for everyone. Parenting time is meant for you to spend time with your kids, so take advantage of it.
Parenting Time Is Not a Competition
Some parents feel like they need to compete to provide the most exciting experience for the kids. At the end of the day, children just want to spend quality time with their parents. Don’t put the kids in a position of having to choose one parent’s vacation activities over another’s. Putting your kids in the middle of a conflict is not healthy.
What’s Best for the Kids
The most important thing to remember is to do what’s best for your children. All kids deserve a happy childhood and vacation time should be for creating fond memories, not animosity. As much as possible, work with your co-parent to ensure your children have a healthy, happy vacation.
